Scott Walker, freedom lover

So much for individual rights. Guess the smokers will have to go across the street now.

A more restrictive ban on smoking will outlaw smoking within 30 feet of all Milwaukee County buildings, a move aimed at dispersing smokers huddled around building entryways.

County Executive Scott Walker is to announce the new restrictions today.

Walker also will propose a change in county ordinances that would eliminate designated smoking areas in county buildings, including the courthouse and Mitchell International Airport.

The 30-foot no-smoking perimeter will be enacted through an executive order to be signed today by Walker, spokeswoman Fran Rudig said.

Well the county owns the buildings and should be able to decide whether or not certain activities are allowed on its property, yes?

The problem comes because technically every resident of the county owns the county and thus the county buildings. However the county residents elected Mr. Walker to make decisions on their behalf. If the majority of county residents disagree with Mr. Walker they can elect someone else next term.

You have to weigh freedoms, right? My freedom to swing my fist around ends at your face. So should people be free to smoke or should people be free to not be subjected to second hand smoke?

The smokers are still free to smoke, just not in certain places. I also don't think the county should expend money to provide designated smoking rooms for smokers. Smoking is basically a leisure activity and the county shouldn't spend money to accommodate it.

How can you be anti-idiocy if you ARE the idiocy?

Oh, now now, there's a certain irony in a big, bad freedom-loving, power to the individual Republican like Scott Walker making a collectivist, public health decision. Don't get mad at me for pointing it out and chuckling.

Hey, I'm all for the decision, personally. It's one of the few good things Scott Walker's done lately.

Whoa, whoa, whoa- Milwaukee COUNTY owns the airport. How ghetto is that?

I'd almost discount it as a "collectivist public health decision." It's more a convenience sort of thing. If smoking is a leisure activity, which I'd argue it most definitely is, then the government shouldn't make allowances for it on government property. Especially when many other people find it objectionable. Similarly I don't think you'd make much headway in your individual right to death-metal band practice on government property or even drinking alcohol.
