Do State of the ____ speeches have any relevance?

In a modern world with a 24/7 news cycle, is there any purpose to bringing executives into a legislative chamber and allowing them to bloviate?

Yes and no.

If you're actually paying attention to what's going on in the world, the State of the Union/State speeches probably don't give you much new information.

On the other hand, there are probably some people out there for whom the only political things they watch are the State of the Union, and the fall presidential debates. If you took the SOTU away, it would be interesting to see what those people would do.

I'm less sure about the State of the State. That was probably more tilted towards political junkies anyway, and now that we have blogs and thewheelerreport.com, it's probably less relevant.
